One Heart Bulgaria is a non-denominational, non-profit organization dedicated to relieving the needs of orphans in Bulgaria.
The Bulgarian government provides about $1 per child per day-not nearly enough to even begin meeting their needs. The children in Bulgarian orphanages often live in dire circumstances suffering needlessly from correctable handicaps or medical needs. Many children are labeled as handicapped when in actuality they are simply withdrawn, frightened, and lonely due to a lack of affection and attention.
All of One Heart Bulgaria’s programs have been created with the primary goal of dramatically improving the lives of orphans in Bulgaria. They have achieved this many ways, they have created medical and life skills programs, projects, sponsorships, internships and training of orphanage staff.
Programs such as the Hydrocephalus Program provides specialized medical attention for orphans suffering with hydrocephalus. They have a dental program and life-skills for teenage orphans.
Bulgaria has approximately 8700 orphans living in 144 institutions! Like all orphans they are at risk of aging out of the orphanages unprepared for life; putting them at risk of prostitution, drug use, suicide, disease and gang affiliation. The orphans of Bulgaria are largely “invisible”, very little awareness has been brought to their plight.
